Nom porté dans la Charente et les départements voisins, également écrit Faudrit, Faudrais, Faudray. Sans doute un dérivé de l'ancien français "faude", avec deux sens possibles : brebis (et dans ce cas le nom pourrait désigner une bergerie), mais aussi lieu d'où on extrait le charbon de bois.
